Furniture Refinishing A Job Or Pleasure
What about that old table sitting in the garage, the one that was a steal at the thrift store several years ago. It has potential now, just as it did when it was purchased. That piece may have a few nicks and crannies, but wood filler works wonders. Bringing an article back to life is by no means an easy task, but furniture refinishing is fun and very fulfilling once the job is completed.
The main thing is to follow the directions on the manufacturers labels of all the products used. Have all tools needed at hand before beginning which will make the job much easier.
Apply the remover according to manufacturers label, and wait out the time period for the stripper to do the work. Wipe down the article, to remove the paint stripper. Use only the products the manufacturer suggested to clean up the residue.
If an electric sander is available it is much easier than trying to do it by hand. Make sure the edges are not neglected while sanding. With this process it is not necessary to sand all the way to the wood finish, but a smooth surface is imperative.
Do not apply too much pressure to the sander, the results may be unpleasant leaving swirls or waves in the wood. Start out using a lower grid sand paper for best results.
Wipe the sanding dust away using a damp cloth. Fill in holes or nicks in the furniture with wood filler. Let dry and sand smooth. Wipe the article again with a damp cloth. A lint free cotton cloth works best.
Remove paint stripper according to label directions. Gingerly sand to avoid leaving gouges or digs in the wood. Clean the sanded area with a damp cloth to remove the sanding debris. If the furniture piece has nicks in it, repair them with wood filler. After the filler dries, sand it down until it is smooth.
Apply stain in a dust free area, to avoid dust particles attaching to the wet finish.Once the stain has dried, polyurethane can be used to acquire a glossy, protective coating. Furniture refinishing is a hobby that many enjoy, and often turns into income.
